Our friends at IMP have a great one here, and this is an artist we’ve been fans of for a long time.
Channel Tres has never quite belonged to a scene. Raised in Compton, he built his sound pulling from house, rap, funk, and West Coast soul without committing to any of them — and that tension is the whole thing. Hypnotic club music with the weight and presence of hip-hop. The deadpan delivery over a heavy groove. The restraint where most producers would reach for a drop. “Topdown” and “Controller” put him on in 2018, and they still land at 1am like nothing else in the crate.
Since then he’s worked across generations and genres with KAYTRANADA, SG Lewis, Jungle and built a reputation as one of the most compelling live performers in electronic music, from small rooms to Coachella. He’s out behind Enigma, the follow-up to 2024’s Head Rush, made largely in isolation in Topanga Canyon alongside Thundercat, Pharrell, and Nick Sylvester.
Calm, magnetic, impossible to pin down. Go see it.
